Who Is Jesus?

Written by John Carson

What do Mormons think of Jesus Christ? What a person believes about Jesus Christ is paramount to a person's salvation.

John 17:3 says:

“And this is eternal life, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

The LDS church, which Mormons call "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" publishes a Bible Dictionary in the back of editions of the Holy Bible. On page 681 of their 1993 edition, a brief but concise description of the nature of Jesus is given prior to His existence on earth. It reads:

“All mankind are his brethren and sisters, he being the eldest of the spirit children of Elohim.”

In Mormon Doctrine, page 278, Mormon Apostle, Bruce R. McConkie wrote:

“All men, Christ included, were born as his children in pre-existence.”

On page 77, he wrote:

“Spirit entities as such, in their organized form as the offspring of Deity, have not existed as long as God has, for he is their Father, and he begat them as spirits.”

The LDS Church teaches that Jesus is literally our eldest brother, born to heavenly parents. This means that in Mormon Theology, Jesus Christ did not eternally exist as God. They teach that He needed to progress to become a god.

Isaiah 44:8 reveals that there is only one God that exists:

”Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? Ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? Yeah, there is no God; I know not any.”

Psalm 90:2 reads:

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hast formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

The Creator of all things has been God from everlasting to everlasting. Speaking of God the Son, Colossians 1:16-17 tells us:

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

Jesus Christ did not derive his existence by heavenly parents. He did not need to progress to become a god. Isaiah 44:8, Psalm 90:2 and Colossians 1:16-17 clearly shows that Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things. He eternally existed as Almighty God.
